An areola reconstruction is often the final step in completing a more natural breast appearance.

After nipple reconstruction, a tattoo creates the appearance of an areola. A tattoo is a simple process and can be repeated in the future if the color fades over time as tattoos usually do. The areola is initially usually slightly darker than desired to compensate for the expected fading. Frequently, a tattoo on the opposite areola is used to achieve appearance symmetry.
