The latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap (LDMF) is another breast reconstruction procedure available that uses your own skin, muscle, fat and other tissues. Breast implants are often used in conjunction with your own tissue to add volume to a LDMF reconstructed breast and to restore a breast of adequate size.
The latissimus dorsi muscle is a long muscle that is under the armpit and continues diagonally across the back. When you raise your arm, you can feel this muscle along the side of the rib cage.
Because of its proximity to the chest, using this muscle tissue for breast reconstruction after mastectomy is a popular surgical technique among plastic surgeons. It a reliable reconstruction procedure that does not require microsurgery.
An additional benefit is that the muscle and skin can remain attached to its original blood supply. This makes a procedure less complicated than other flap reconstruction procedures. It should be noted that there is a scar on the back.
