Radiation Treatment & Breast Cancer

Dr. Kim is extensively experienced with the multiple options available to patients facing radiation therapy. Effective in treating breast cancer, radiation therapy can potentially complicate your breast reconstruction plan.

Dr. Kim works with many outstanding radiation oncologists in the greater Houston area, and she will work integrally with your oncologist and radiation therapist to develop a treatment plan best suited for your goals. It is known that radiation treatment can increase the risk of implant related complications, especially, scar formation around a breast implant. Dr. Kim will usually recommend an autologous reconstruction if the patient requires radiation therapy.

The recommendations can include delayed autolgoous (tissue-only) reconstruction or modified delayed-immediate techniques. Your restoration options and the timing of your breast reconstruction will be determined during your consultation and after close collaboration with your cancer care team.
