{"id":470,"date":"2010-11-13T20:47:20","date_gmt":"2010-11-13T20:47:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.drkimplasticsurgery.com\/?p=1204"},"modified":"2025-10-27T16:36:21","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T16:36:21","slug":"breast-reconstruction-patients-prefer-silicone-implants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.drkimplasticsurgery.com\/blog\/breast-reconstruction-patients-prefer-silicone-implants\/","title":{"rendered":"Breast Reconstruction Patients Prefer Silicone Implants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1208\" title=\"breast implants\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drkimplasticsurgery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/implants.jpg\" alt=\"breast implants\" width=\"200\" height=\"143\" align=\"right\" \/>Breast cancer patients who undergo mastectomy and then <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drkimplasticsurgery.com\/procedures\/breast\/breast-reconstruction\/\">breast reconstruction<\/a> prefer silicone implants over saline implants, according to a new study.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/cncr.25552\/abstract\">study<\/a>, published in the online edition of the journal <em>Cancer<\/em>, surveyed 482 women who had breast reconstruction surgery with implants after undergoing double mastectomy. Of those women, 176 chose silicone implants and 306 chose saline implants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the time women get to choosing the implant type, this is yet another decision in their treatment that they are faced with,\u201d said Dr. Colleen McCarthy, a reconstructive surgeon in New York who led the study. \u201cThey ask, \u2018What would you do? What do women tell you?\u2019 We didn\u2019t have the answers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Survey responses showed that women with silicone implants were more satisfied with their reconstructed breasts than those with saline implants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen tell me it feels more natural and they prefer the look,\u201d said Dr. McCarthy. \u201cBoth implants can wrinkle a little bit, but the silicone tends to wrinkle less. It\u2019s about how the breast feels when she touches it, how she looks naked and in clothes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study also found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Women who received radiation therapy after mastectomy were far less likely to be satisfied with either type of implant.<\/li>\n<li>Satisfaction with either silicone or saline implants diminished over time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dr. McCarthy noted that insurance reimbursement for silicone and saline implants is the same, and surgeons don\u2019t have a financial incentive to recommend one type of implant over another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt also appears that patient satisfaction with postmastectomy implant-based reconstruction is generally high and that individual treatment variables \u2014 such as implant type \u2014 explain only a relatively small amount of the variance.
