It found there are procedure trends within different ethnic groups in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen a patient comes in from a certain ethnic background and of a certain age, we know what they\u2019re going to be looking for. We are sort of amateur sociologists,\u201d said Dr. Kaveh Alizadeh, of Long Island Plastic Surgical Group.<\/p>\n<p>A few of the ethnic trends the doctors reported seeing in their patients include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Egyptians are getting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drkimplasticsurgery.com\/procedures\/face\/facelift\/\">facelifts<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Iranians favor nose jobs.<\/li>\n<li>Dominicans are getting buttocks lifts.<\/li>\n<li>Russian women favor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drkimplasticsurgery.com\/procedures\/breast\/breast-augmentation\/\">breast augmentation<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show that plastic surgery keeps increasing within ethnic groups in the United States. Around 750,000 Asians in the U.S. underwent cosmetic procedures in 2009, which is more than double the number in 2000. About 1.4 million Latinos underwent cosmetic procedures in 2009, a threefold increase from 2000.<\/p>\n<p>Motivations for ethnic plastic surgery appear to have changed according to Victoria Pitts-Taylor, a sociology professor at Queens College. She said that in the early days of plastic surgery, immigrants underwent procedures to try to look \u201cmore American.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, rather than trying to fit in, today\u2019s immigrants appear to have procedures that reflect their home culture\u2019s trends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy patients are proud of looking Hispanic,\u201d said Dr. Jeffrey Yager, whose office is in a largely Dominican neighborhood in Manhattan. \u201cI don\u2019t get the patients who want to obscure their ethnicity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One Dominican patient of Dr. Yager\u2019s is Italia Vigniero, 27, who got breast implants in 2008 and is considering a buttocks lift. \u201cWe Latinas define ourselves with our bodies,\u201d she said. \u201cWe always have curves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The doctors also said that in addition to their own cultures, immigrants are also influenced by American pop culture and reality TV shows about plastic surgery.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Different ethnic groups are choosing plastic surgery that is \u201ctailored to their cultural preferences and ideals of beauty,\u201d according to an article in the New York Times.
