Breast augmentation with Dr. Sugene Kim here in The Woodlands, Texas, uses saline or silicone breast implants to add volume and shape to the breasts. This procedure gives women the opportunity to add balance and proportion to their bodies, regain lost breast volume, improve the size of naturally small breasts, or correct breast asymmetry. Known as one of the top female plastic surgeons in the Houston metro area, Dr. Kim is a double board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in breast enhancement.
Who Should Consider Breast Augmentation?
Women considering breast augmentation, who visit from Conroe and Spring, TX, and beyond, are often interested in more than increasing the size of their breasts; they want to enhance their self-confidence as well.
Breast augmentation using implants is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures worldwide, and women of almost any age, background, and body type can be candidates for the procedure. Some of the most common candidates for breast augmentation are:
- Women whose breasts never developed as fully as they would like
- Women who have lost breast volume as a result of the aging process, pregnancy, nursing, or weight fluctuations
- Women who have noticeable breast asymmetry and want to “even out” their breasts
Some women who consider breast augmentation surgery are also candidates for a breast lift . If you’re interested in achieving fuller breasts while also improving your breast position, you may wish to consider a combined breast augmentation and lift . Many women include breast augmentation in a mommy makeover to restore the appearance of pre-pregnancy.
Your Breast Implant Options
Dr. Kim performs breast augmentation using either silicone or saline breast implants. While either implant type can create beautiful results in the right candidate, there are some important differences between the two.
Silicone Breast Implants
- Silicone breast implants are comprised of an outer silicone shell filled with a cohesive gel, also made of silicone
- The cohesive silicone gel has a gummy bear-like texture, which many women and plastic surgeons alike find resembles the feel of natural breast tissue
- Silicone breast implants are the top choice for the majority of women who have breast augmentation. In particular, women with naturally small breasts who do not have an ample amount of breast tissue to provide coverage for the implant can benefit from the natural feel of silicone implants.
Because the gel that is used to make the filling for silicone implants is cohesive, these breast implants will not deflate in the rare event of a rupture. This means that a breach in the implant shell is not always obviously detectable. The FDA recommends that women with silicone implants have an MRI every 3 years in order to detect any issues. However, most women with silicone implants can enjoy their breast augmentation results for many years without complications.

Saline Breast Implants
- Saline breast implants are comprised of an outer silicone shell filled with a sterile saline solution.
- Saline implants can provide a firmer feel than their silicone counterparts and often are used to create a high, rounded look.
- Saline breast implants can be filled with their saltwater solution after insertion into the breast pocket. This allows Dr. Kim to use a slightly smaller incision to place the implants than is required for silicone implants.
- Because saline implants can be filled to a custom-tailored volume, they can be particularly popular options for women concerned with breast asymmetry.
Saline implants may be more prone to rippling than silicone implants. Rippling is the folds of the implants that can sometimes be seen through the skin. In the event of a rupture, the liquid filling of saline implants means the issue should be immediately noticeable, as the implant tends to deflate right away. Saline implants are a popular option among a wide range of women.
Breast Augmentation Techniques
There are many ways to perform breast augmentation and your procedure will be customized to meet your individual needs. After Dr. Kim has helped you decide on the type and size of implants that are best for you, the two of you will discuss the following:
- Would you benefit more from breast implants placed above or below the chest muscles?
- Which breast augmentation incision technique would produce the best outcome for you?
Depending on the implants you select, as well as your existing anatomy, your incisions may be made in the breast fold (called the inframammary incision), along the lower edge of the areola (called the periareolar incision), or even in the armpit (called the transaxillary incision). Although each incision location has pros and cons, inframammary incision is usually preferred due to less risks for nipple sensation loss, scars to breast tissue and infection rate. You ad Dr. Kim will discuss your best incision options during your consultation.
Dr. Kim can place your implants either on top of the chest muscle, called subglandular placement, or beneath the chest muscle, called submuscular placement. For most women, a submuscular placement creates more natural-looking results and a better, longer lasting surgical outcome. Ultimately, Dr. Kim will consider your lifestyle, your goals, the amount of existing breast tissue, and other factors when determining which placement will achieve the look you want.
During your initial consultation with Dr. Kim, you will address these techniques and more. Dr. Kim will work with you to help you understand the factors that contribute to choosing the best approach to your breast augmentation procedure, as well as help you gain a realistic idea of what you can expect. Together, you can also go over the cost of breast augmentation, the advantages of each implant type, the best breast implant size for you and details about your procedure and recovery period.
How Much Does Breast Augmentation Cost?
The cost of the Breast Augmentation ranges from $6,500 to $8,000, depending on the type of implants being used, current office promotions, and the surgical plan. The standard breast augmentation with silicone breast implants is usually around $6,500. The price includes the cost of the anesthesia, the surgery center fee, the surgical bra, and one tube of scar cream.
Your Recovery & Results
Most of our patients find the breast augmentation procedure easy to recover from, with many only taking a few days off from work. Although patients usually begin feeling back to normal a few days after the surgery, there are restrictions to ensure adequate healing. Patients should not lift anything weighing more than 10 pounds for the first 3 weeks following surgery. Dr. Kim also recommends that patients do not submerge their incisions in water or go swimming for at least 3 weeks following the breast augmentation procedure. Patients should not exercise for at least 4 weeks following surgery and should refrain from doing any upper body exercise for 6 weeks.
Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation?
The vast majority of women who have undergone breast augmentation will have no problem breastfeeding their children. Today’s surgical techniques leave the glands and ducts intact, so there should not be any impact on nursing. However, it is a good idea to tell your surgeon if you plan to breastfeed in the future, and the two of you may decide to avoid a periareolar incision just to be safe. Additionally, there is no evidence that breast implants affect the quality of breast milk in any way.
Can breast implants improve my sagging breasts?
For a very few women with minor sagging, adding breast implants can “take up the slack” and restore a perky appearance to their breasts. The more common scenario, however, is that the weight of the breast implants will actually make sagging worse. Since there is extra skin which has lost much of its elasticity, the implants pull sagging breasts down farther. This is why we commonly perform breast augmentation with a breast lift.
When can I start wearing regular underwire bras?
The typical rule of thumb is to wait 6 to 8 weeks before wearing a push-up or underwire bra. The underwires can irritate certain incisions, and may prevent them from healing properly. Additionally, these bras tend to push the breast implants upward, which can displace the implants and affect your ultimate results.
Do breast implants come with a warranty?
Dr. Kim uses the Natrelle brand breast implants, which come with a lifetime warranty for implant ruptures. The cost of the implants, both saline and silicone, is always covered by Allergan in the event of a rupture or deflation. Regarding the silicone implants, if the implant rupture occurs within 10 years of implant placement, Allergan will reimburse the patient up to $3,500 for the surgical costs. Allergan also provides a 10-year warranty against capsular contracture on their silicone breast implants.
