Recent years have seen a boom in the popularity and effectiveness of laser treatments for skin resurfacing and hair removal. At our practice in The Woodlands outside of Houston, TX, our patients love these treatments because they’re versatile and non-surgical — and they work! Dr. Sugene Kim offers laser treatments to address a variety of skin types and concerns.
What are laser treatments?
Laser treatments are advanced cosmetic procedures that use a focused beam of light to produce a wide range of cosmetic improvements, including: Removing unwanted hair, tightening wrinkles and loose or lax skin, eliminating spider veins, and repairing sunspots and other skin damage. These safe and powerful light beams allow our doctors to work at new levels of precision with little to no pain and shorter recovery times for patients, and to accomplish what would be otherwise impossible.
Who Should Consider a Laser Treatment?
At SGK Plastic Surgery, we use the Cynosure Icon™, a laser platform that offers several different devices within a single machine. Thanks to the Icon’s versatility and ease of customization, most of our patients are good candidates for at least several of its many procedures and benefits. You may be a good candidate for laser treatment if you are bothered by any of the following:
- Vascular lesions such as spider veins
- Skin texture irregularities
- Unwanted hair
- Mild skin laxity
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Sun damage or dark spots
Am I a candidate for laser treatments?
Good candidates for laser skin resurfacing, laser hair removal and Morpheus8, include patients who are in good overall health, who have no skin active diseases in the areas being treated, and who do not smoke or can quit smoking for 2 weeks leading up to and after treatment. Patients who easily scar should inform Dr. Kim before treatments begin.
Laser treatment recovery
While some laser treatment options are more aggressive than others, laser skin treatments typically produce only mild to moderate reactions, and these tend to heal or subside quickly. Areas of the skin treated with laser skin resurfacing will appear red or sunburnt and may itch or sting during recovery. Laser hair removal causes hair in the treated area to fall out gradiently over the course of about a month after treatment. The treated skin may look and feel sunburned throughout part this time. Cold compresses and moisturizers will ease itching, and sunscreen and limiting sun exposure are recommended.

Let There Be Light
Meet the advanced laser and energy systems Dr. Sugene Kim uses to bring her patients the very best in personalized cosmetic care.
Morpheus8 is the first and only treatment of its kind, using unique “fractionated radio frequency energy” proven to reduce wrinkles and fat and rebuild collagen for a beautiful improvement to skin tone and texture and a noticeable reduction of fine and deep lines. Morpheus8 slows the aging process and leaves you looking even better, even younger. Morpheus8’s microneedling system delivers finely tuned and targeted pinpoints of RF energy to kickstart collagen production, tighten and brighten your skin and return a healthy and vibrant glow.
Cynosure Icon is an effective treatment option for everything from sun spots to stretch marks, and skin damage to scarring. Workable on every skin type and tone, it offers a wide range of flexibility and powerful results. Using micro-beams of laser energy to stimulate the body’s natural healing process and activate the production of healthy new tissue, the Cynosure Icon leaves your skin looking and feeling vibrant and youthful.
Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is an FDA approved means of permanently removing unwanted hair. It’s safe and effective for long-term results and comes with many secondary benefits:
Unlike waxing, which is both painful and impermanent, laser hair removal patients experience little to no pain or discomfort during and after laser hair removal.
Reduce ingrown hair
With laser hair removal, you minimize or entirely eradicate the possibility of painful and unsightly ingrown hair. If it grows back at all, hair tends to be softer and more sparse after laser treatment.
Laser hair removal targets hairs in their active growth phase. At this stage, a beam of light from Cynosure Icon is carefully aimed at pigmented areas of the skin, with the objective of heating the follicle and stopping hair growth.
Speed & Efficacy
The Cynosure Icon laser removes hair at the speed of light Literally. Laser hair removal is most effective when done as a series of consecutive treatments, 4 to 6 weeks apart.
Laser Treatments Options
Laser hair removal works by conducting laser energy through the pigment in the hair and into the follicle, disabling or severely limiting its ability to create new hair. Because of this, laser hair removal works best on patients with dark hair and lighter skin. Laser hair removal can be administered virtually anywhere on the body, including the face, back, legs, arms, and pubic area.
Intense Pulsed Light
Also called IPL, this light-based therapy breaks up areas of pigmentation into small particles, allowing the body to effectively process them and creating a clearer complexion. IPL is well suited for patients who are bothered by signs of long-term sun damage.
This is a gentle option for resurfacing and smoothing the skin. In this procedure, laser energy penetrates the skin’s surface and strengthens the underlying tissues, stimulating collagen development and leading to smoother, clearer skin. Other resurfacing options include microneedling and chemical peels.
Morpheus8 Skin Resurfacing
Morpheus 8 is one of several laser treatments we offer. With it, you can easily fight off the fine lines and wrinkles problems, thanks to our Cynosure Icon™ machine. Furthermore, this treatment stimulates collagen production, contours the face and requires no downtime. We are among the best Morpheus 8 providers in the Woodlands.
Morpheus8 is a versatile laser skin resurfacing treatment that uses radiofrequency energy to tighten skin and reduce the appearance of scars and discolored skin tone. During a Morpheus8 procedure, we use a handheld device with small pins to create tiny punctures in the skin. The radiofrequency energy penetrates the skin through those punctures, heating the tissue below the skin and promoting the production of new collagen. Morpheus8 is typically used to treat the face and neck, but can also treat areas such as the abdomen and thighs. The number of treatments needed is partly based on whether a patient wants a less or more aggressive approach to their concerns.
